⏳ Do commemorative coins tarnish over time?Updated 13 days ago
Over time, all coins will naturally show signs of ageing. This can be described in different ways — tarnishing, discolouration, or toning — and while it’s completely natural, the speed at which it happens depends largely on how and where your coins are stored. In most cases, this is a very slow process.
Tarnish forms when elements in the atmosphere react with the metal on a coin’s surface. Here at The Koin Club, we’re always working to improve how our Proof coins are produced and stored, meaning our more recent coins are less likely to tarnish than older ones.
That said, no coin is entirely immune — even newer coins will naturally change over time. It’s all part of their journey as treasured collectibles.
💡 Collector’s tip: Keeping coins in their original packaging or a protective case can help slow the process and preserve their appearance for longer.
