✨What does BU mean?Updated 17 days ago

Brilliant Uncirculated coins — often called BU coins — are minted to a higher standard than the coins you’ll find in everyday change or bullion coins. They’re a fantastic entry‑level collectible for new and seasoned collectors alike 🖤.

To create them, the dies (the tools that strike the coin’s design) are carefully polished and finished by hand. The blanks — the flat metal discs that will become coins — are fed into the press by machine and struck twice. This double strike sharpens the detail and gives the coin a smooth, high‑quality finish.

While they’re produced more quickly than Proof coins, BU coins still offer crisp, clear designs — just with slightly less definition and a more matte appearance than the ultra‑high‑polish Proof finish.

Most BU coins are made in base metals such as copper‑nickel, but you’ll also find special issues in gold and silver for collectors who love something extra special. They’re often released in themed ranges — from history and nature to pop culture favourites — and many come in presentation packs to protect and display them beautifully.

💡 Collector’s tip: BU coins are a great way to enjoy high‑quality minting without the higher price of Proof coins, making them perfect for starting or expanding your collection.
